Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, suffered from a malignant tumor known as an oropharyngeal carcinoma, specifically a squamous cell carcinoma of the jaw. This type of cancer originated in the tissues of his mouth, more precisely in the palate area. Freud was a heavy cigar smoker, which significantly increased his risk for this kind of malignancy. Over the course of 16 years, Freud endured more than 30 surgical procedures to address his cancer and related complications. His struggle with this disease was considerable and impacted his life profoundly until his death in 1939.
