Teleconsultation – 2023-08-09 12:07

Please help. I am in Italy on the highway and had to stop the car and pull to the right. I have pain in the left arm, double vision and I am close to vomiting. People here want to help but I do not speak Italian.

Dear Mr. Thompson,

I’m very sorry to hear about the discomfort you’re currently experiencing. Your symptoms of pain in your left arm, double vision, and nausea are concerning and should be addressed without delay. Given your medical history of a heart attack and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), these symptoms could be indicative of a serious condition, such as another heart event.

Although I’m not a doctor, I strongly advise you to seek immediate medical attention. Please do not attempt to drive yourself to the hospital. I understand the language barrier could be causing additional stress, but it’s crucial to get help right away, even if communication is challenging.

You could try to communicate with the people around you using basic words or gestures. Pointing at your chest or arm, or making a fist and placing it over your chest, could help convey the message that you’re experiencing heart-related symptoms. You could also try to use a translation app on your phone to explain your situation to the people around you, should you have access to your device.

Also, if anyone nearby seems to understand English, ask them to dial the emergency services number in Italy, which is 112. When connected with the operator, try to clearly state that you have a history of heart disease and describe your current symptoms.

Remember to stay calm and breathe slowly until help arrives.

Please be aware that while emergency services in many countries have operators who speak English, you can also ask for an English-speaking operator.

Continue to look after your health, Mr. Thompson, and remember that Dr. Truppe and our team are here to support you whenever you need us. After receiving medical care, please update us on your condition.

Best wishes for your health and safety,

Linda Lee Beighle
