Hallo this is Sarah again, I have the implant with serial number ZZZ-13-FGTH. It seems I have a mild inflammation. I remember I had this once already, do you have a record in the medical history? What should I do?
Dear Sarah,
Thank you for reaching out to us and for your continued trust in our practice. I understand your concern about the mild inflammation around your dental implant (Serial number: ZZZ-13-FGTH). I have reviewed your medical history to provide you with the most comprehensive and relevant advice.
Your implant was placed on August 3, 2013, and you have been very diligent about your follow-up visits and maintaining your oral health, which indeed greatly contributes to the longevity of your implant.
In reference to your query, you indeed experienced an instance of inflammation, specifically peri-implantitis, postoperatively in October of 2013. Peri-implantitis is a condition characterized by inflammation in the tissues surrounding a dental implant, leading to bone loss in more serious situations. At that time, it was possibly exacerbated by smoking and newly diagnosed diabetes. Antibiotic therapy was initiated, and smoking cessation was recommended.
It’s important to remember that smoking can have adverse effects on your oral health, especially with dental implants. I’m glad to see that in recent reviews you’ve reported a consistent reduction in smoking, with your records showing that you had quit completely by August 2023, which is quite commendable.
Given your current concern of mild inflammation, there are several steps we can take:
- Continue your oral hygiene routine: Brushing, flossing, and using a mouth rinse can help maintain the health of your gums and teeth, including areas surrounding your implant.
- Schedule an appointment: For a more comprehensive evaluation, it would be best for you to come in for an appointment. Dr. Truppe will be able to assess the inflammation and suggest the most appropriate treatment, which may involve professional cleaning, adjustment of your oral hygiene routine, or antibiotic therapy.
-
Monitoring: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice any additional changes, such as increased swelling, pain, or bleeding, please contact us immediately.
-
Medications: You’re currently taking Levothyroxine to manage your hypothyroidism. While this medication is not usually associated with gum inflammation, it’s always important to keep track of any new medications or changes in dosages, as they can sometimes impact your oral health. If there have been any recent changes, please let us know.
-
General health: As you’re well aware, general health conditions, such as diabetes, can affect oral health. Continue to manage your overall health, including maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and minimizing stress.
Please remember that these are general recommendations, and the best course of action will be determined after a thorough examination by Dr. Truppe.
I hope this information is helpful to you, Sarah. If you have further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re here to assist you in maintaining the best possible oral health.
Best regards,
Linda Lee Beighle
